MyMiniFactory user Lucia Di Santo has invented that game that’s part Lego, part Jenga, and part mathematical engineering, that’s sure to trick and challenge your friends. What makes the Bricks super tricky is that each block has a different centre of mass—some will lean towards the left, others to the right, and if you’re lucky a few might be grounded. In order to know, the arrow design on the sides of the bricks points you towards the direction of the weight.
“In a nutshell I wanted abstract bricks that I could stack in unusual ways…I always thought it would be cool if all the weight was on one side of the brick so that it wouldn’t fall over when hanging off the table or off another brick,” said Di Santo. “3D printing made my idea possible.’
The files were designed in SolidWorks and allow for support-free 3D printing, reducing material waste and the need for post-processing finishes. “It is VERY important to print with 100% density,” she warned. The blocks had a layer height of 0.15 and printing took approximately 16 hours with 242g of filament. The starter collection files are available to download on MyMiniFactory, and obviously the bigger you want your towers to be, the more bricks you can 3D print.
Designing them wasn’t simply a matter of drawing out the rectangles and printing, however—these aren’t your average Lego bricks. In order for each brick to have its own weight and centre of mass, Di Santo partnered up with engineer and mathematical whizz Anthony Voilque. Using SolidWorks, he was able to come up with a calculation that would keep the centre of mass of the brick as far away from the middle as possible, all while ensuring that from the outside, it still looked like a regular brick.
This is a tricky task, since a brick that is too small doesn’t have room to move the centre of gravity far enough away, while bricks that are too long wouldn’t fit on a standard desktop 3D printer bed. If you’re interested in the exact math behind it, you can see how the balance works in the diagram below.

Di Santo predicts that Tricky Bricks would be a fun game for users of all ages. There’s no complicated set-up or instruction manual: just pick up a piece and then try to use your intuition and balance to build up from there. Children can experiment with wobbly towers while learning the principles of balance and engineering, while adults can challenge their friends, countering each other’s weight or trying to use every single piece before the inevitable fall.
Tricky Bricks is a fun variation on classic brick games, which nearly every one has played with at some point in their lives (even Minecraft is just a digital riff). Di Santos plans to expand the game even further by designing add-on packs and adaptations, which will all be available to download and print. Will your towers wobble or win? Antonina, your wife, presents you with the first dilemma. She will want you to adopt someone.
*If you adopt, you will gain a general/statesman. Belisarius will also gain the Well-Watered trait, which prevents his commanded army from taking desert attrition. The penalty is 10 turns of -7 integrity.
*If you don’t adopt, you gain an integrity buff, but Beliarius’ army becomes afflicted with dysentery, which lasts roughly 4 turns.
*The best choice here is to adopt. The Well-Watered trait is nice considering you’ll start in North Africa where there is a lot of desert attrition areas, and there are plenty of battles to be had early on to reduce/negate the integrity penalty. Also, dysentery will kill a lot of your men, which will sideline Beliarius’ army in the critical early stages of the campaign.
A princess will be imprisoned by the Ostrogoths. Justinian will task you with rescuing her, which will involve moving an army into Ostrogoth Kingdom territory.
Empress Theodora will approach you to not take on Justinian’s mission.
*If you reject the mission, you will receive a +5% income bonus to buildings for 50 turns, as well as +2000 denarii.
*If you accept the mission, you will receive a -5% income penalty to buildings for 50 turns.
Once the mission is completed, you will be awarded an army by Justinian with the temporary “no upkeep” buff. You will also get a large boost to diplomatic relations with the Ostrogoths.
The choice here is up to you as there are pros and cons to each one, but my personal preference is to reject the mission. Why?
*You have to send one of your armies up to Italy from North Africa. This takes a lot of turns.
*You have to raid an Ostrogoth province to complete the mission. The Ostrogoth diplomatic bonus isn’t a “bonus” per se; it just offsets the diplomatic damage done by trespassing and raiding for the mission.
*An extra army is nice, but early on you don’t have the income to build up a third army. Add on that Theodora’s penalty debuff, and you’re going to be hurting. You get an army every chapter end, so you will not be gimping yourself by taking one less army.
Antonina’s Gems
Your wife Antonina will want you to raid Caesaria (which is under Berber control) in order to get her some gems.
*If you raid them, you’ll get an army from Antonina
*If you don’t, you will get a political penalty from Antonina, but a +10 diplomacy buff with the Berbers.
This one is up to you also. I personally decided not to raid the Berbers. Why?
*The Berbers are strong; they are usually in the top 5 factions. They may help you against the Vandals, and maybe even the Ostrogoths.
*More importantly, you need their help if you want to destroy the Moors quickly.
*You will probably need to take Berber territory sooner or later, but the +10 diplomacy buff for 50 turns can help delay hostilities if you choose to take Italy first, otherwise you are looking at a long war in North Africa.

A Tale of Two Kingdoms hearkens back to adventure games of old when the level of difficulty was greater because the hints provided by the game were fewer, offering more of a true adventure to the player. However, the challenge presented here is not so great that it is only recommended to the more experienced gamer as even the most casual of players will enjoy traipsing about the kingdom of Theylinn. The Way Adventure Games Used to Be - No Hints!
While there is no hint system to offer help in times of trouble, the rudimentary point-and-click design of Two Kingdoms is such that items or areas that are necessary to explore typically stand out from the scenery, such as a barrel of apples near a shed, making it relatively simple to spot a necessary game component. Don’t be fooled into thinking this ruins that challenge though. Watch Out for Nasty Villains
Expect to frequently be caught off guard by rogue wizards and hideous goblins, veiled assassins and mythical fairies who will abruptly alter the course of the game by cursing you (causing inverted mouse movement), trapping you, and even killing you which restarts at the previous save point. Mini-challenges are a part of the game itself, such as finding a way to earn money or learning how, or who, to remove the curse placed on you by the wizard. Older Graphics
The graphics themselves are well detailed which is only apparent in close-ups during dialogue. Most scenes are too pixelated, frequently making it difficult to spot an item before looking at it closely. Conclusion - A Good, Classic-Style Adventure
Overall, A Tale of Two Kingdoms earns a score of medium for difficulty because many of the tasks are easy to figure out, but some do require serious intellect and thought to solve.
